Have you been shopping lately? Standard 4:3 screen aspect ratio CRT Television sets are becoming a thing of the past. One major audio/video retailer in my area no longer carries standard CRT TV sets. They only carry 16:9 (screen aspect ratio) LCD and Plasma sets! I find this sudden transition unbelievable. I prefer a large 4:3 CRT screen. For me they are much brighter and more vivid. The Sony KD32FS170 32" Trinitron WEGA Hi-Scan Digital Television is an excellent 4:3 set. It has a Digital 3-line comb filter that increases picture resolution and reduces noticeable dot-crawl, which is visible on less expensive 32-inch brands. It has Rear audio and composite video inputs as well as an S-video input for DVD, Laser Disc players and Super-VHS recorders for higher picture resolution. The picture on this TV set is excellent.

Sony KV 36HS510 - 36" WEGA CRT TV - 1080i Review

The Sony was great while it worked, but as the set stopped as soon as the warranty ran out. Sony used to make great, long-lasting products, but it seems like they've lost it lately. The set itself is very heavy, and so if it does stop working you've got a huge problem in getting it repaired.

Sony's KV-36HS510 36-inch FD (flat display) Trinitron WEGA television is a feature-packed CRT that's fully HDTV-ready. Its outstanding features include playback of JPEG image files from Memory Stick media, analog and digital high-definition inputs, a suite of picture-enhancing technologies, and twin-tuner, split-screen picture-and-picture.The set's standard 4:3 aspect ratio, Hi-Scan 1080i display, and picture-improvement circuitry let you view a mix of source signals at high resolutions, up to 1080i. DRC--Digital Reality Creation MultiFunction circuitry--upconverts standard interlaced (480i) video sources to 960i or 480p, while inputs as high-quality as 720p (720 lines, progressively scanned) are upsampled to full 1080i.Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p and 720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The set's auto 16:9 enhanced mode detects anamorphically encoded widescreen program sources and offers full picture resolution on the video program, wasting none of its usable lines of resolution on the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.MID X (Multi-Image Driver X) circuitry lets you watch NTSC television broadcasts and high-definition programming simultaneously, side-by-side, using Flexible Twin-View two-tuner picture-and-picture. A special zoom mode lets you customize the size of each viewing window.ClearEdge VM wideband velocity modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The set's 3D digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).The KV-36HS510 also employs CineMotion Reverse 3-2 PullDown technology (often called 3:2 pulldown), a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movies in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Two high-definition component-video inputs grant optimum connection with a DTV decoder and progressive-scan DVD player, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. The set even has a DVI-HDTV interface to provide a digital connection between your DTV receiver and the KV-36HS510. You can choose between a set of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs for extra convenience. A rear AV output offers both fixed and variable-level analog audio outputs for hookup with, for instance, both a VCR and a surround receiver. If you don't have Dolby Pro Logic processing or a surround speaker system, the TV's SRS TruSurround will simulate surround sound through any two speakers. The set gives you stereo audio (with 7.5 watts per channel) as well a powered, 15-watt subwoofer to round out the low end. You can label the set's video inputs and channels for easy selection.Other video technologies include auto white balance, Dynamic Focus circuitry, Dynamic Picture Processor circuitry, Trinitone color temperature control, and vertical aperture compensation. An optional accessory for the set is the Sony audio/video cabinet SU-36HS1 (pictured). What's in the Box TV, remote control (RM-Y188), 2 AA batteries, user's manual, and warranty information.

I have a Sony 51 inch high-definition tv also, but a couple of years ago I saw this tv at a friends house, hooked up to cable. The picture was amazing. Yesterday we bought one for our den and hooked up to DISH network (satelite) the picture is also the best I've ever seen for a tube tv. Plus it's easy to use and set up and has a feature called CLEAR EDGE that makes the picture even sharper. The only knock is the weight, about 180 pounds. You need two people to move this tv, it is heavy. But heavy usually means quality and this tv is the best on the market in this price range.

Sony's high-value KV-32FS120 32-inch WEGA television packs a wealth of video technologies that guarantee sharp, vivid pictures from a range of sources. The set's FD (flat display) Trinitron WEGA flat-screen technology delivers high image accuracy, wide viewing angles, and corner-to-corner detail with no geometric image distortion. The visually flat FD Trinitron tube minimizes annoying glare from light sources, enhancing contrast. Squares are square, straight lines appear straight, and circles are truly circular. One of the KV-32FS120's coolest features is its 16:9 enhanced mode, which delivers maximum picture quality by concentrating all viewable scan lines within a letterboxed image--wasting none of its horizontal resolution on rendering the black bars that border a widescreen image.Clear Edge VM wideband velocity modulation improves definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The set's digital comb filter removes blurred edges between colors and reduces dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt), while magnetic quadra-pole technology reduces "beam spot" distortion and improves corner-to-corner focus and picture sharpness.Program Palette presets offer combinations of picture settings engineered to make the most of specific entertainment types. Settings include vivid, standard, movie, and sports. Channel fix lets you select a specific TV channel (3, for example) for cable box reception. Then you can control a compatible cable box via the TV remote without inadvertently changing the TV from Channel 3.Top-of-the-line component-video inputs (Y/PB/PR) minimize digital and line-scan artifacts from compatible video sources, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. A coaxial RF input accepts a feed from an antenna or an older VCR or cable box. Choose from 2 sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs for extra convenience when hooking up a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output offers fixed-/variable-level analog audio outputs for hookup with a surround receiver. The set produces stereo audio and BBE sound enhancement with 10 watts per channel through built-in speakers.Other video technologies include auto white balance (which establishes the picture's tint, or hue, by adjusting sensitivity to red, green, and blue light, resulting in truer whites), Dynamic Picture Processor circuitry, tilt correction, Trinitone color temperature control, and vertical aperture compensation (which sharpens picture definition and edge detail on the vertical plane). You can label the set's video inputs and channels for easy selection. What's in the Box TV, RM-Y195 remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and warranty information.
