(More customer reviews)I don't usually write alot of reviews, but I did a lot of research for this tv purchase. We were upgrading our family room tv from a 35in 720p toshiba tv. We were looking at the 52 inch mark, plasma vs lcd. In a quick review make sure you consider what room you will be placing your new tv into. You are about to spend big bucks make sure you are honest about where these tvs are going or you will be unhappy!
First Plasma vs LCD (This comes from my reading again at higher end plasma vs lcd at the $3000-4000 range 52in-61in)

Good
-Clearly plasma edges lcd in contrast. If you are looking for the truest blacks plasma wins hands down
-Long life 80000+ viewing hours
-Some people complain of motion artifact in lcds. The "triple football" effect. Plasma does not seem to have this problem.
-Clearly cheaper than lcd at the 46in+ mark, Significantly cheaper if looking at the 60+ inch
Bad
-Heavy (don't think you are going to mount this baby on the wall yourself
-Screen reflection (Must be in a room with low light to no light to really enjoy) Great for dedicated movie room ...family room with windows not so much.
-Burn in for gamers---I think they are working on this but don't take a chance

Ok so that being said the sony xbr seemed like it fit the bill for me. I needed ~52inch, has to go in family room, must work with xbox/playstation. I also watch lots of football so I had to take that into consideration.
Armed with this I went out looking at tv's. LCD overall fit what I was looking for and as I said unless you are making a dedicated movie room go with lcd. As a note sony believes in lcd tech so much they stopped making plasma screens! Don't know if this is all that but sony usually knows their business.
So going out looking at 52 inch lcds you will run into a few choices---
Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sharp.
Quickly I will note that toshiba and sharp are on the lower end. Less contrast, less hdmi inputs etc...however are usually less money! So be sure to look, but overall the samsung and sony tvs are far superior for a few hundred extra. So if you are reading this you are clearly looking at the xbr sonys. It really came down for me to Sony xbr4 vs the Samsung 71 series. These are really close or even almost the same tvs. The sony xbr4 has 3hdmi, 1:13000 contrast, and 120hz. The samsung 71 also 3hdmi, 120hz, but 1-25000 contrast. The contrast generally considered the amount of true black from the screen. Overall I would say that gave the edge to the samsung and if you read reviews you will see people raving about the samsung vs the sony xbr. However! and this is a big however! Samsung coats their lcd's with a coating that does have a moderate amount of reflection. I have no idea why as this killed it for me. And I am serious that you need to think about the lights in your room. If you have any windows or lights if front of the tv that is what you will be seeing in a plasma or samsung. It will drive you nuts! There is no NO reflection from the xbr4. So ultimately I purchased the xbr4 from amazon. The picture is amazing from my hd tivo to bluray, hd dvd, and standard is well standard. Although numbers say the samsung is better in the real world you will not notice the difference. So I am happy to say this is a five star tv.
Also of note:
Sony offers the xbr5 version of this tv. $400 for a piano gloss black rim. Not worth it to me for plastic.
Samsung also offers an 81 series, with 1:500000, and increased backlights. They are about 1G more than the 71 series and xbrs and if you are looking at high end plasmas, I would take a look at these too. However, same reflective coat.
Decide this isn't for you and want to go plasma... Well I looked at that too. Stick to Panasonic and Pioneer and you can't go wrong. Pioneer kuros hands down the best plasma to date!!!!

(More customer reviews)The XBR4 has blown my socks off. On display at the electronic store it actually looked worse than my other LCD Samsung LN-3241D. After fine tuning and adjusting the picture, whether it was recent non-HD DVD's or HD content, with the 120Hz Motionflow, Pixar's Toy Story looked 3 dimensional, and the colors were nothing I had seen before from this DVD. I am so happy with this purchase and the higher price tag is well worth it. I also watched a streamed Netflix movie (Amadeus), using the PC input, and the movie quality was ok. With the Samsung the streamed quality is noticeably not as rich in color and a bit grainier. I Recommend this LCD TV. Sony is definitely the leader in high end TV's. P.S. I am not a Sony fan boy, I am still angry about the root kit found on their CD's.

(More customer reviews)I will admit up front that I am a complete HDTV newbie. I hung on to a 20 year old, 22 inch CRT color "monitor television" for far too long, in part because I do not watch much television programming (a bit of baseball, PBS, occaisional Law & Order reruns, that sort of thing) and in part because the whole HDTV techno nerd thing was too intimidating. After much online research and a few surreptitious visits to Big Box electronics stores, I finally settled on the 40XBR9 and bought it from an Amazon seller -- and could not be more pleased with my selection. The picture quality is simply riveting. The menus are reasonably user friendly and I have not found it all that difficult to calibrate for optimum results in a softly lighted room. With minor tweaking, the factory defaults work well for most cable television programming. I used the CNET suggested calibration for movies on the 52XBR9, and it works very well on this 40 inch unit.
This is a beautiful television. The bezel is as slim as they come and is an unadorned, moderately glossy black. While it is not a small television, it is not too overbearing for a medium sized bedroom or office. Considering its slender bezel, and the fact that there are no visible speakers, the sound is more than adequate for watching most TV programming. I purchased a ZVOX 525 sound base and an OPPO blu ray player to go with it. I have yet to watch a blu ray disc, but upscaled DVDs like Ratatouille and Wall-E are incredibly crisp, vivid and detailed, with wonderfully natural color, deep, pure blacks and brilliant whites and grey tones. With sound from the ZVOX, this is a wonderful way to enjoy movies in a moderate sized room without an enormous investment of time and money and without a lot of wiring and equipment monopolizing the space.
The one down side is that the XBR9 is not very forgiving of poor quality source material. My local cable provider still offers a limited selection of true HD content. SD television does not fare well on this set, although with some tweaks you can get acceptable picture quality -- ratchet down the sharpness so the poor resolution is not obvious, use a 4:3 aspect ratio rather than 'stretch' the image to fill the screen, so the perspective is not distorted, turn down the brightness and restrict the color range to avoid the exaggerated and artificial hues that seem to be part and parcel of SD TV, and you get a reasonable picture on par with a decent CRT. But once you've seen good quality 16:9 HDTV content, you will be somewhat disappointed with SD sources.
This competes head to head with the high end LCD and "LED" TVs from Samsung. I think it beats them for at least two reasons. First, the Samsung models have a very glossy, "wet look" screen, which is really a distraction. Under some conditions, it gives the picture more "pop," but except in a darkened room, the glare problem is insurmountable. Second, the comparable Samsung televisions have wider and more obtrusive bezels with a brilliant piano black finish, which is made even more garish by Samsung's somewhat ludicrous red "Touch of Color" gimmickry. The Samsung design is like over the top prom wear. The 40XBR9 is the electronics version of the perfect, simple and refined little black dress.
Prices seem to fluctuate wildly -- the prices quoted on the date of this review are about 15% higher than they were when I made my purchase ten days ago. You may want to keep an eye on the market and catch the next wave of "sales." But you won't buy this TV because it is an inexpensive "bargain" -- you may buy it because dollar for dollar, it will give you the most pleasure during the years it will be in service.
TWO MONTHS LATER: Having now had the opportunity to use my Sony 40XBR9 to watch post-season baseball in HD, as well as a number of blu-ray discs, I remain as pleased with my purchase as ever. This has transformed the way we watch movies and cable programming at home. I added a Harmony One remote to the system to avoid the remote control shuffle required to operate the blu-ray player, Zvox, cable box and Sony in tandem. It all works nicely and with a minimum of effort.

(More customer reviews)This is a very impressive TV. It replaces a 34-inch Sony WEGA tube-based high-def television that I bought in 2003, and I have an XBR6 in another room.
Picture quality is very good. I'm not an expert and won't quibble about technical details. All I know is that I can see the makeup that doesn't completely cover the news anchor's face, and I can examine his dental work. That's probably more than I really need to see. :-) The picture seems to pop out into the room, and that effect is enhanced by the TV's narrow frame. There's a little bit of what I guess is called "mura" when there is no picture on the screen, but it's hardly noticeable and vanishes completely when a picture appears, even if the picture doesn't occupy the entire screen. Not an issue at all.
Sound quality is also very good. I use a separate speaker and amp system if I'm watching something where sound is especially important, but the built-in speakers here serve their purpose quite well and are amply adequate for routine use.
For me the most interesting thing is the ethernet connection, though this is not for browsing the 'net. Sony is still in the process of updating its internet presentation, but I have used the TV to download high-definition movies from Amazon, and it worked very well. Some competition in that space would be useful. Why no NetFlix access? (8/4/09: After an automatic software update last night there's a NetFlix logo and a message that NetFlix access will be available in the fall.)
With movies and TV programs available from Amazon and others, with the Bravia's expanding internet access, and with local broadcast stations offering multiple digital channels with different content, this TV could compete with cable and DirecTV. DirecTV's limited selection of pay per view movies just cannot compare to this. Also, the increasing capability for "a la carte" purchase of program episodes currently available only through DirecTV (or other cable or satellite providers) will reduce the value of my monthly subscription. Really has made me consider my DirecTV subscription.
The XBR9 can retrieve photographs (or music or movies) from my computer via my home ethernet network, or from a flash drive plugged into a USB port, so I'll be able to make lots of people view my photographs and slide shows! (Of course, seeing your photos on this screen in superb color and detail will necessitate another visit to Amazon to upgrade your collection of photography paraphernalia.)
One little quibble: there's a panel of switches located on the right side at exactly the position where I put my hand to move the TV on its mount (Amazon shows an image). Sure would have been thoughtful of Sony if they could have provided some kind of protective device to make it a little harder to accidentally flip one of those switches when I'm trying to adjust the position of the TV.
Finally, and this is important: I installed it using a Sanus wall mount Sanus Systems VMAA26B Universal Articulating Mount with Extended Reach for 30" to 50" Displays (Black). The TV has a lot of mass, and if the cables reach their limit while the TV is still moving, something has to give. So be careful to leave enough slack in the connecting cables to allow the TV to move freely throughout its range. That's especially important with the coaxial antenna cable that screws into its connection and can't merely be pulled out, but it seems possible that you could also damage other connectors, including the HDMI connections.
