Philips 32RF50S 32" Flat Screen TV Review

Philips 32RF50S 32 Flat Screen TV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this TV 1.5 years ago. I thought it was great for the first few months, then I gradually noticed that the picture just didn't seem as clear anymore. Now when I watch my digital cable, I can't even read small text on the screen because it is so blurry. Same thing for DVDs...forget about reading subtitles! It's very annoying and frustrating.
I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with it, but I am certainly NOT happy with my TV now. I contemplated buying the Sony WEGA model, but opted not too because of the price increase. Now I see it probably would have been worth it. No more Phillips products for me.
One other con, the TV is HUGE and HEAVY It's so awkward to carry, I almost killed myself moving it last summer.

Toshiba 32AF44 32" TV with FST PURE Flat Screen Review

Toshiba 32AF44 32 TV with FST PURE Flat Screen

I have always been impressed by Toshiba's televisions, and this one is no exception. I purchased this TV last week, and I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase. The picture looks great (especially DVDs through the component video inputs), the sound is way above average for a TV in this range, and the features are equal to what you'd find on pricier brands. Basically, Toshiba gives you the quality you want but without the huge pricetag. One thing made me sad though: only one set of Component Video inputs. So if you want that high quality Xbox experience in addition to DVDs, you'll have to switch it through your receiver (which is what I do). Anyway, great TV and great price.

Note: Toshiba 32AF44 32" TV with FST PURE Flat Screen is no longer being manufactured. You may want to consider purchasing the newer Toshiba 32AF45 32" Flat Screen CRT TV instead.
Feature-rich and amazingly affordable, Toshiba's 32-inch 32AF44 offers big-screen quality for a standard-screen price. The versatile CRT television is equipped to deliver vivid, high-contrast pictures FST PURE flat picture tube, which looks great and minimizes geometric distortions in the process. Generous connection options and parental controls let you and your kids use the set for a variety of applications. The 32AF44's 3-line digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Meanwhile, velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing in a brighter, clearer picture.Toshiba provides 2 user-selectable 16:9 modes for displaying widescreen images. Letterbox mode scans the entire screen, creating gray bars above and below the picture area, significantly reducing the chances of uneven CRT wear or "burn-in." The set's vertical compression mode uses all available scan lines to represent the widescreen, letterboxed image with as much clarity and detail as possible. The 5-watts-per-channel set receives stereo audio programming and SAP (second audio program), often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The 32AF44 derives a heightened sense of stereo separation from its double-baffle speaker system, and BBE High-Definition Sound improves speech intelligibility and restores the dynamic range of compressed musical passages.A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources. You get 2 sets of rear AV inputs (one of which has S-video) as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The 32AF44 also features V-Chip parental controls, GameTimer, a sleep timer, and a glow-in-the-dark, 4-device universal remote control with DVD operation. What's in the Box Television, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and warranty information.

Panasonic Viera TH-42PX80U 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV Review

Panasonic Viera TH-42PX80U 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV
Average Reviews:

Price was a significant contributor to my decision to buy this TV. Conversations with tv-guys made me think that I needed to pony up for a 1080, but I just could not justify the premium over the 720p. Now that I have it, I am glad I saved my money. The picture quality is great, both in high def and for normal (low def?) viewing. Whenever I have guests and the TV is on, they are blown away by the quality and ask my questions about it.
I also like the anti-glare screen. At first I was a little concerned that the anti-glare picture would look "dull" compared to your average plasma, but that is no longer a concern - it looks great.
Another big plus for me was the appearance of the TV. Like other Panasonic models, this TV is sleek. Vizio and other manufacturers seem to incorporate larger speakers that look clunky in comparison. The size of the tv relative to the picture size is great - looks nice on the wall, and doesn't take up any more room than it needs to.
In fact, the reason why I am writing this review is because I am going to buy another one for a different room in the house. Panasonic has definitely won my repeat business with this one - I think that says it all.

Samsung HMX-H100 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with10x Optical Zoom Review

Samsung HMX-H100 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with10x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

I actually bought this camera from another store that had a huge sale and saved a ton of money even with a 2 year warranty. I'm actually a college student majoring in visual communications. This camera easily transfers data from the camcorder or just using the SDHC cards directly inserted to any PC. The editing software is basic and not thrilling by any means. If your an average individual looking to slice and dice footage this camcorder is perfect for you. The files are saved as compressed .MP4s. If your looking for another level of editing such as myself using Premiere Pro or Final Cut, you must convert the files. Easiest way to achieve this is taking the .MP4s and upload them into Quick Time Pro 7 (can be downloaded for Macs or PCs). From Quick Time you have to save the files as .MOVs. If you do not do this loading the files in an editing program you will only be able to get the audio. As well Quick Time is 30 bucks and no need for expensive converting programs out there. As far as the audio is concerned it is excellent as the picture is. Wind can give you some trouble even with the wind screen, but what condensed internal mic doesn't? Comes with a nice touch screen and limited push buttons. Menu use is very easy and self explanatory. Fast hand movements do get a bit choppy if your recording in HD from the refresh rate. 8GB SDHC cards will give you approximately 61 minutes of record time on the highest settings. Charge time is very fast and on a full charge you will get about 75 minutes of straight recording time. You can also get some great Transcend SDHC cards for very cheap as well there is a very nice package deal for extra batteries and clothes. Like in the other reviews the only difference between this camcorder and the others in the HMX product line is the size of internal memory. So it's up to you if its worth getting a higher series that only carries more internal memory. That is about all I can think of discussing this camcorder. This is a great consumer camcorder and totally worth the 500+ you will be dishing out.

Sharp X-Flat 32F630 Flat-Screen 32" TV Review

Sharp X-Flat 32F630 Flat-Screen 32 TV

I bought this television a few months ago and I must say that it was worth every penny. The picture is sharp and clear and the 16:9 pulldown is awesome. It really makes a difference when you're watching widescreen movies. You do really need to use the composite input to appreciate the picture quality of the TV, though. Overall its a great buy for those who love movies but don't want to dish out too much money.

The 32-inch 32F630 offers not only Sharp's elegant X-Flat cabinet design, but a flat picture tube, which not only looks cool compared to a conventional, bulbous screen, but also provides a high-quality, high-contrast picture--partly owing to the screen's ability to reduce reflected ambient light, but also due to Sharp's contrast enhancer and velocity-modulation scan technology. A great feature called V-compression even lets you view widescreen (letterboxed) DVDs in their native aspect ratio, in full resolution--none of the set's abilities are wasted in rendering the black bars necessary to display a movie in its original aspect ratio. Velocity-modulation scan improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The 32F630's three-line comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped t-shirt). The set provides stereo audio (with five watts per channel) from broadcast programming via Multi-channel Television Sound (MTS), which permits broadcasters to encode stereo audio within the video portion of TV programming signals. EquiSound keeps differing program levels from blaring out at you. A component-video input grants optimum connection with a compatible DVD player, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. You can choose between a set of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (tasteful hidden when not in use) for extra convenience. A rear audio output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver; you can choose a fixed- or variable-level output (variable lets you adjust the volume through the TV's remote). If you don't have a six-channel speaker setup for DVD audio, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: SRS TruSurround simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV). The set also features a trilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French), ID labeling for channels and inputs, closed-caption display, V-Chip parental control, a sleep timer, and a universal remote control.

BROKSONIC - 32" Wide HD Digital LCD TV Review

BROKSONIC - 32 Wide HD Digital LCD TV

You can get this TV for 400 or less. I picked one up for my girlfriend in November 2008, along with a Sharp BD player. We also run a PC to it with a wireless keyboard in order to watch TV through imdb and hulu, and their PS2, Xbox360 and Wii all run to it through a component video switch. We also hooked up an old Radio Shack antenna for HD brodcast TV (You don't need an "HD" antenna). Everything looks great!
If you're not going to use a calibration disc, like Digital Video Essentials, make sure you put it in Movie mode. You'll get weird artifacts in shadows in the default "sports" mode.
It doesn't automatically switch well between FS and Widescreen modes, so you may have to tell it the mode manually on occasion, and it defaults to Sports mode if it is unplugged. Those are my only two complaints.
BD titles and DVD titles look fantastic. I have a Pioneer Pro-111FD at home, and although it rocks, it did cost almost 8x the price. I don't mind watching a movie over there at all. The contrast is deep enough so you don't get those distracting washed-out blue-blacks, and the colors are bright and vivid. In fact, the picture at times is so jaw-dropping sharp and realistic (good source material), it looks almost 3D. I've looked at other bargain priced sets in the 32" size, priced around 500 or more. Save yourself a hundred or two and get this if you can find it. We/she and her family have been using it for about three months now and love it!

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 10MP "Exmor R" CMOS Digital Camera with 3-inch Touch-Screen LCD (Silver) Review

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 10MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera with 3-inch Touch-Screen LCD (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was probably a month or two ago that I saw some press releases on a new point and shoot Sony had coming out, the WX1, which intrigued me. Like a lot of photo enthusiasts, while a DSLR is the weapon of choice, the elusive holy grail seems to be a small point and shoot camera that can slip in your pocket so you can be packing at all times, yet would still take good looking photos that are not so riddled with noise (a problem almost always plaguing point and shoots because of their small sensors) that they look like your tv screen when the test pattern has gone off. As the old adage goes, the best camera is the one you have on you when you need it and a DSLR is a little tough to integrate into your daily accessories.
So in evaluating this camera, perspective is required. This is not the camera you would go to for your best work. It is not the same package of everything you have with your DSLR and collection of lenses shrunk down to something the size of a couple of packs of gum. It is a tiny point and shoot camera that easily slips into your pocket with room to spare that does way better than the average point and shoot. In other words, it's a top performer for the junior varsity but its not ready to hang with the varsity.
Here's the reasons I wanted one:
1. I wanted a small camera I could keep in my pocket for daily use. What a lot of photographers call a "street shooter", something you can pull out and use to grab shots of whatever you happen to run into during your day.
This camera is certainly small. I've seen a few people refer to it as "chunky" and they must consider Ellen Page to be fat. This is tiny. I was surprised at how small the box it came in was, and even more surprised when I found the camera in the small box. My first impression was it wasn't much bigger than one of those old minolta spy cameras. My previous point and shoot camera was the Sony W300, which most people considered slim and stylish, and this camera is smaller in all respects than that. Side by side the WX1 seems slight smaller than the W300, but looking at it alone it looks like a tiny toy camera. I gave the W300 to my wife, and when she caught a view of the WX1 her reaction was "But yours is so much smaller." She was thrilled when I gave her the W300 but now has taken to calling it a hand me down. I went from hero to goat. As they say, size matters.
2. Stealth factor - I wanted a camera that I could sneak into places that don't allow cameras.
You could drop this baby into the front pocket of your levis and still have room for a decent game of pocket pool. I can easily get it, a wallet and even a cell phone all in the front pocket of my jeans. Alone in the pocket, it scarcely makes even a bump that a security guard might notice.
3. Low light capabilities - I dislike using a flash and wanted something that could take good pictures in natural light, and could function well in dark places.
The low light capabilities of this camera are astonishing. The camera can basically see better in the dark then you can. Lots of the pictures I took in dark rooms look way more illuminated in the photos then they were in reality.
Because it seemed to be everything I had been searching for in a point and shoot, I went ahead and ordered this as soon as Amazon had them available. Because they were not yet widely available, there were no hands on reviews by the usual photography sites and blogs. While waiting to get the camera, I would check Amazon every day to see if anyone who had actually used the camera had put up any reviews yet. The initial few reviews were alarming. People who said they wanted to love the camera didn't. The gist of their complaints seemed to be that the camera took good pictures in low light (although a few didn't even agree with that) and crappy pictures in good light. Sample photos that people began posting on Flickr also didn't look too hot. Because of this I regretted ordering the camera so quickly and almost just sent it back to Amazon without even opening the box.
I decided to try it for myself before deciding whether to send it back, and found it to be much better than the initial reviews had painted it (and subsequent reviews on Amazon now seem to be swinging towards the positive).
I do have to agree that a lot of the shots I've taken outdoors in bright sunlight seem a little overexposed and dull, but I've also had this problem with my Canon DSLRs when set on automatic. In any case, I've found that with the WX1, all you have to do is open the photo in Photoshop and click "Auto Contrast" and the problem is instantly corrected. A reviewer on Amazon has also noted that you can get more vivid, warm outdoors photos from the WX1 by using the Program mode and moving the White Balance setting from Auto to Flash. I tried this, and with the White Balance set to Flash the pictures basically look the same out of the camera as they do after I've run them through Photoshop and hit Auto Contrast. Another user mentioned in some of his posts that turning off the DRO in the menu greatly improves outdoor photos.
The argument that most people just want nice looking snapshots right out of the camera and don't want to mess with Photoshop is valid, but those are probably not the people who are going to be interested in this camera anyway. The camera's not cheap and those people would be very happy with the snapshots they could get with an inexpensive entry level point and shoot.
In any event, after a couple of weeks with the camera, my recommendation for everyday daylight shots is not to use the Intelligent Auto mode, but rather put the camera in the "P" or program mode. This will allow you to fix the ISO at 160, which is fine 90% of the time. Decrease the EV setting by .07. Most shots will now come out great. If you want warmer colors put the white balance on Flash, or increase the saturation a little after the fact in Photoshop. As noted above, turning off the DRO also seems to help.
As for claims that the WX1 photos come out noisy, I don't agree. Even the low light pictures don't seem to have a noise problem. This is not to say they are DSLR quality, but they don't look bad at all for a point and shoot.
Other positives:
4. A nice 24mm wide angle lens, which lets you get very close to things and is also great for cramped indoor settings, buildings and landscapes. Speaking of getting close to things, the macro feature springs into gear automatically when you stick the camera within an inch or two of an object.
5. Fast on, little lag time between shots unless you're using the Burst, Panoramic, Anti-Blur or hand held Twilight modes which take a little time to process.
6. HD Video. I never really use this but nice to have in case I ever catch the You Tube bug.
7. Panoramic mode. In this mode simply press the shutter and sweep your arm and the camera creates a panorama all by itself. You don't have to take a bunch of single shots and try to stitch them together later with a photo program. The only drawback is that it sets the exposure for the area you start, which can make it difficult to get a good one in uneven lighting.
8. Battery life seems pretty good.
So what's not to like about this camera?
1. No manual controls.
The W300 had full manual controls, and I wonder why Sony couldn't have included them here and really made this a top of the line point and shoot. Many serious amateur photographers who would otherwise love this camera won't even consider it because it doesn't allow them the ability to manually control aperture, shutter speed, etc. This, along with the lack of RAW capabilities, will probably keep this camera from competing with the Panasonic LX3 and upcoming Canon S90.
As note above, there is a limited work around. Using the Program (as opposed to Automatic) Mode allows you to set the ISO between 160 and 3200, which will force the camera to use a slower or faster shutter speed. You should note that if the DRO is on, you can't use a ISO higher than 800. Turn it off if you want to go higher. You can also put the camera in High ISO mode, which allows for faster shutter speed.
Canon's soon to be released S90 seems to have become the great new hope for shutterbugs longing for a small point and shoot that takes great low light photos instead of the WX1, primarily because it not only also has a fast lens and improved sensor, but also manual controls and raw capabilities.
2. No viewfinder.
I read somewhere this morning that 25% - soon to be a third - of the population are aging baby boomers. If they're anything like me, they have a hard time reading a restaurant menu in dim light, or for that matter anything else a few feet from their face without reading glasses. Translated to small point and shoot cameras, it's almost impossible for an older pair of eyes to clearly see what's on a 2.7 or 3 inch LCD screen on the back of camera, even if bright sun isn't washing out the screen. Most of the time with the WX1 I really can't make out what's on the screen, because to me its all out of focus (the problem is my eyes, not the camera). I just have to sort of aim the camera in the direction I want and estimate the framing and have faith. The W300 had a viewfinder, which was why I bought it. Sure wish this one did too, even if they had to make the camera a little bigger.
3. Mediocre zoom.
The WX1 has a 5x zoom, which would seem to be better than the standard 3x zoom found on a typical point and shoot. In practice, because this camera has such a wide angle lens to start with, zooming out 5x doesn't seem to get you any closer than a 3x zoom on a point and shoot without a wide...Read more›

Toshiba REGZA 32LV67U 32-Inch LCD HDTV with DVD Player Review

Toshiba REGZA 32LV67U 32-Inch LCD HDTV with DVD Player
Average Reviews:

Pros: Great high contrast screen, built in DVD player, built in speakers, side audio/video in ports, 3 HDMI ports, computer port. And finally, price.... oh.. and yes, it actually has a ATSC Tuner!!
Cons: Menus aren't too intuitive... sometimes tries to be too simple, other times it too difficult. Some settings are not remembered, you have to set them over and over and over and over... Unit came with an immediate flash upgrade (flash card included), wasn't expecting that. DVD is not Bluray or HD-DVD. No PIP... which is typical nowadays, just seems a shame to waste all of those inputs.
This is an excellent HDTV for the price. Having the built in DVD is a plus BUT it is not a HD DVD unit... just a normal DVD. This unit is going into my daughter's upstairs den. Highly recommended. I tested against LG, Samsung, Phillips and Westinghouse. The Toshiba picture was a good as the best from the others and had the additional features.

Now you can play your entertainment library on one versatile machine. Since the 32LV67 has both a DVD player and a 32-inch screen, you won't have to worry about connecting different electronic components in order to watch your favorite program. This convenience is matched only by its smart, stylish design.
The Value of LCD TVs Aside from their obvious aesthetic value, LCD TVs are much more practical in the home than CRT (tube-style) televisions. They take up a smaller footprint, and thus use up less floor space in the room. Also, LCD TVs are lighter and easier to move around when cleaning or redecorating. The 32LV67 is only 4.65 inches deep and weighs less than 37 pounds. Best of all, LCD screens use less power than CRTs and plasma screens.

Full-Featured DVD Player The 32LV67 includes an integrated, slot-loading DVD player. It has upconverting technology that improves the standard picture definition of regular DVDs to match the 1366 x 768 (720p HDTV) display resolution of the 32LV67.

Connections The set has a built-in digital television tuner, so out of the box it can receive digital broadcast ATSC signals and QAM signals used by most digital cable providers. It also has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner, so it can also accept traditional analog signals. It is also capable of these connections:
HDMI inputs: 3
ColorStream HD component video inputs: 2
PC monitor input: 1 (VGA 15 Pin D-Sub)
RF input: 1 rear
A/V inputs: 2 (rear and side)
Optical audio output: 1

Audio The SoundStrip speaker system hides the unit's speakers in a thin strip bordering the screen. They're powerful enough to deliver big stereo sound, but they don't add significantly to the size of the set.

Toshiba's StableSound feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. This is an extremely useful feature when transitioning between a quiet television program and a very loud commercial advertisement or when changing channels.

SRS WOW, a combination of SRS 3D, TruBass, and Focus sound-expanding systems, create a 3-D sound field with improved bass response over standard TV audio and create directed, three-dimensional audio sweet spot for maximum enjoyment. The cabinet includes stereo speakers, but the TV also has optical digital output for connecting to your audio system.

Other Features Channel browser shows you thumb-nail images of the last five channels you've watched at the touch of a button. You can also see previews of your preset Favorite Channels along the bottom of the screen.

We purchased this TV because the picture quality was better than the Sony Wega. It also fits perfectly in our entertainment center where the JVC or the Sony have those large speakers on the side that make it impossible for it to fit into any center that is equiped to hold a 32" TV.

Panasonic's 32-inch HDTV-ready CT-32HL44 television provides state-of-the-art picture quality thanks to its innovative Tau PureFlat picture tube, which is perfectly suited to deliver outstanding home theater performance. It's compatible with both 1080i/480p HDTV displays, and it features a motion-adaptive 3D comb filter, selectable 16:9 viewing mode, progressive CinemaScan (3:2 pulldown), digital velocity scan modulation, and dual-tuner picture-in-picture.
Two-tuner picture-in-picture with split-screen display lets you view two programs at once by dividing the screen in half down the middle. Each program is shown at full height, with one program on the left side and the other on the right.
Progressive CinemaScan (3:2 pulldown) provides faithful reproduction of film-based materials. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; Progressive Cinema Scan digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
The motion-adaptive digital comb filter prevents any two lines with different colors from being processed together in the comb filter at the same time, minimizing any "hanging dots" in the image. With digital velocity scan modulation, advanced circuitry along the neck of the CRT senses shifts from black to white in the video signal. The black and white portions of the signal are sped up and slowed down, respectively, resulting in improved transitions.
This set has a built-in 181-channel tuner, though you'll need an optional HDTV tuner to receive high-definition broadcasts. The two built-in speakers (15 watts apiece) provide simulated surround sound and BBE high-definition audio enhancement, which helps restore the dynamic range of musical passages to help provide a more natural sound.
The CT-32HL44 has 4 composite A/V inputs (1 front), 3 S-video inputs (1 front), 2 component-video inputs, 1 RF, 1 headphone jack. It adds an HDMI connection, providing high-quality, uncompressed digital audio/video signal transmission.
Tech Talk Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Traditional television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television has either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. A 16:9 aspect ratio is widescreen and appears rectangular, which looks more like a movie screen, filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience. HDMI-HDCP interface: HDMI is a new standard digital connection between A/V devices, such as a set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver, and a digital television. HDMI offers exceptional video and audio quality with a single quick-disconnect connector. It supports multichannel digital audio transmissions and component-video color spacing for true rendering of HD video. HDMI supports the HDCP copy protection standard, allowing transmission of copy-protected digital content to your display.
What's in the Box Panasonic CT-32HL44 32-inch TV, remote control, 2 AA batteries, and printed operating instructions.

Insignia NS-L26Q-10A - 26" LCD TV - widescreen - 720p - HDTV Review

Insignia NS-L26Q-10A - 26 LCD TV - widescreen - 720p - HDTV
Average Reviews:

I bought this TV for the Mrs. for casual bedroom viewing. For a 720p HDTV, going head to head for picture quality, you had to spend $100 more to get something which smoked its picture quality. The colors are rich; motion tracking is OK.
Verizon FiOS looks great on it when fed via HDMI. DVD's & Blu-Ray look great on it too for casual, non-critical viewing.
The speakers are decent and have a balanced sound. The surround sound emulation option sounds like crap. It literally makes the whole TV enclosure sympathetically vibrate like a cheap clock radio.
The only other con is that the remote is not a universal remote so it cannot be programmed to control the Verizon set top box nor an Insignia BluRay player. Is it too much to ask that all remotes have the capability to be universal remotes?
Otherwise, given its limitations, it is a great budget HDTV.

Samsung LN32A330 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

Samsung LN32A330 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I researched LCD TV models and prices for over a year, checking them out in a local store. When I saw this Samsung, I jumped at it:
* Price was right, under $700
* Great picture with super low refresh rate(to minimize the blurring you see on older sets).
* The one in the store ran much cooler than older models. This was important as I wanted to put the set inside my entertainment cabinet.
* Great tuner: My old analog TV could only pick up 2 channels via the antenna. (I mostly watch DVDs.) The Samsung picked up over 20 digital channels flawlessly, just using a $20 RadioShack inside antenna! I don't need cable!
* The picture is simply stunning when you are viewing a hi-definition broadcast (1080i). I gasped when I first saw it.
Only downside: You can't use a VCR with this set because it doesn't have the outdated composite video input that VCRs require, only the newer component and HDMI inputs.
I've had this set for a couple of months and I love it!

Sony Bravia M-Series KDL-32M3000 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

Sony Bravia M-Series KDL-32M3000 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am very happy with this purchase. The TV has very good looks, sleek and discreet. The equivalent Samsung and Sharp had frames too shiny and looked cheap. The picture is great. SD cable looks very good. Audio is very good. Best of all is Sony reliability. My previous experience was the Samsung 30" SlimFit. That had bending issues at first and was replaced. Then it refused to turn on, and customer service was rude and unhelpful. The Slimfit has major reliability problems. I am very happy with this Sony that replaced it.
Adding to this review after 2 weeks of extensive use. I compared this TV to Sony's 37" KDF-37H1000 LCD projection TV. This 32" LCD TV won out because:
1. Sharper picture on HD signal - the KDF-37H1000 is a little more blurry. (Note the KDF-37H1000 picture is better than no-name brand LCDs). The Sony LCDs had better focus.
1a. LCD TVs have a brighter picture. The Sony TVs have 3 picture settings: i) Vivid (very bright, what you see in Best Buy, ii) Standard (less bright, what looks better at home), and iii) Cinema (softer, more reds and earth shades). On the KDF-37H1000, you have to set it to vivid to watch even at home. On LCDs, you have to reduce brightness becuase they're brighter pictures.
2. SD cable on LCD TV is much much better than on KDF-37H1000.
2a. Motion was much cleaner on the LCD TVs. Sports blurred on the KDF-37H1000. I watched a bit of "8 below" Disney's Alaskan adventure with lots of white dogs and snow, and it looked bad, blurry and soft on the KDF-37H1000.
3. LCD TV has much less depth. Looks sleeker. I also tapped my fingers and felt around the frames on the 2 TVs. The LCDs were firmer and fit better. The KDF-37H1000 frame was looser and cheaper materials like a toy.
4. Maintainence costs - the KDF-37H1000 will require $200-400 bulb replacement in 1.5 years. The sales people said this could even happen in less than a year due to bulb malfunctions, just like in a floor lamp or any lamp. Note, Sony is phasing out LCD projection TVs in favor of SXRD, Hence, parts for the KDF-37H1000 will become harder to find. The KDF-37H1000 lamps are already $400 (Sony parts are always costlier - look at their digital camera memories, compared to Canon's).
4a. The complex combination of chips, mirrors, projectors, lamps on a projection TV is more prone to break than the simpler LCD technology. I am an electrical engineer and design integrated circuits for a living.
5. The KDF-37H1000 generates more heat than LCD, but much less than plasma.
6. The KDF-37H1000 has moving parts, such as the cooling fan, etc., All of these are more prone to malfunction.
7. Consumer reports rates the LCD TV reliability higher than projection TVs after looking at consumer repair data. Projection TVs had higher rates of return and repair.
7a. The folks at Best Buy told me they saw higher rates of returns due to reliability on the KDF-37H1000 than on Sony's LCDs.
8. The LCD TV has higher pixel count 1368 X 768, compared to the KDF-37H1000's 1200 X 720. This leads to sharper picture and better focus.
9. Screen door effect on KDF-37H1000. When objects on screen moved, their individual pixels did not move as a group. The picture was constantly dissolving and reforming. Faces had spots that appeared and dissappeared.
10. 2-3 years from now, I can put the LCD TV on a dresser in my bedroom as a 2nd TV, or put it in my study as a computer monitor. Cannot do this with the KDF-37H1000.
11. Moving - when we move houses, the LCD TV will ride easily in the seat in my Honda Civic. Cannot do this with the KDF-37H1000, which will have to go in the back of the truck with my wife.
The KDF-37H1000 was better than the Sony LCD TV in terms of:
1. Sound was much better becuase larger speakers and probably more pwerful amp.
2. A few more features and options that I will not use.
3. Larger screen. However, you must sit further back to avoid seeing spots and motion blurs.
Note the KDF-37H1000 is an excellent TV and very reliable compared to no-name brands. Definitely more reliable than the Samsung Slimfit TVs. We just came out of a bruising warranty battle with Samsung, and their reliability and customer service is pretty bad. The KDF-37H1000 does look very good compared to Samsung or Westinghouse LCD TVs, which had cheap and shiny frames. However, the KDF-37H1000 is just not as good as Sony's 32" LCD TVs. If you want a bigger screen than Sony's LCDs, go 46" or 55" projection. The SXRD projection TVs had better motion. If you're thinking of 37", get an LCD.
One thing the KDF-37H1000 has going for it is Sony reliability. I work for IBM and we design integrated circuits for Sony's products. They require a 100 defective parts per million quality level from us. This is very good in the industry.

Toshiba REGZA 32HL67U 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

Toshiba REGZA 32HL67U 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just purchased this TV after looking at a wide range of TVs to go with my dual-tuner TiVo Series 3 player and an older progressive scan Toshiba DVD player, and I have to say that I couldn't be happier with my selection. I let the TV do the upconvert from 480i from the TiVo and the result looks quite acceptable (assuming you're not 3 feet away), and the HD detail on HD channels is spectacular. The Toshiba has a wide range of picture boxing settings to take care of properly framing the upconverted 480p DVD signal, and a lot of color settings so that tuning the color with Avia-derived settings I found on the internet helped as well. I have my own Avia disc on order to fine-tune the picture myself, as well.
The main products I was comparing against were all other 720p 32" TVs. 1080p resolution seemed silly to pay for in this size, since you can't see it, though the brands that put out 32" 1080p TVs (e.g. Sharp) seemed to have better video processors in the 1080p models and skimp a bit in the 720p models. Specifically, I compared against the Sony Bravia 2010 S-Series (not the XDR2), Sharp Aquos 32D43U, and the Samsung 3253, as well as the Olevia 532/332s as a bargin alternative. The Olevia was by far the least expensive, but its picture quality seemed comparatively much worse, not to mention external styling. In the store I looked, the Sony and Toshiba were solid across the board, the Sharp had the best flesh tones (color setting issues with other TVs?), and the Samsung the best contrast for dark areas (e.g. air contrails behind a slow-motion spinning baseball). Given that the Toshiba was about $150 cheaper than the alternatives at the time, I opted for it and couldn't be happier.

Toshiba's Regza line of TVs marry state-of-the-art technology to hip design. One feature that sets them apart is PixelPure 14-bit digital video processing, which creates more than 4,000 levels of color gradations for a smooth, natural-looking picture without posterization or image banding. Another benefit is a fast response time. Response time is the interval an LCD screen takes to from its darkest color to its lightest color and back again, measured in milliseconds (ms). This screen's response time is 8 ms, which is at the faster and better end of the spectrum. This screen is likely to display cleaner, sharper images during high-action scenes and with fewer image artifacts than other screens in its class. This technology is housed in a black gloss cabinetry that is sure to fit well with most any decor.
The 32HL67 has a panel resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. This qualifies it as 720 progressive-line HDTV, which is a noticeably better picture than standard definition sets, but not as detailed as the 1080 HD sets available. Its 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio delivers most movies the way they were meant to be seen in the theater, without back bars wasting the top and bottom of the screen.

The 32HL67 is only 4.65 inches deep and weighs less than 35 pounds. Best of all, LCD screens use less power than CRTs and plasma screens.

Connections The set has a built-in digital television tuner, so out of the box it can receive digital broadcast ATSC signals and QAM signals used by most digital cable providers. It also has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner, so it can also accept traditional analog signals. It can also make these connections to your audio and video components:
HDMI inputs: 3
ColorStream HD component video inputs: 2
PC monitor input: 1 VGA 15 Pin D-sub
S-video input: 1
A/V inputs: 2

Audio The unit's SoundStrip speaker system hides the unit's speakers in a thin strip bordering the screen. The TV also has optical digital output for connecting to your audio system.

32-inch wide screen A general rule of thumb for selecting the right size television screen is that the screen width--not its 32-inch diagonal measurement--should be between three and five times the optimum viewing distance, such as the distance from the TV screen to where your eyes are while sitting on the couch. Less than that and you may be distracted by the scan lines of the picture. More than that, and you may lose the detail of your TV. Based on this guide, the 32HL67 is ideal for viewing distances of seven to 12 feet.

I am very impressed with this tv. As far as I could find, it is by far the cheapest 32" flat screen HDTV you can buy! The speakers sound much better than I expected. The picture on regular cable tv is great and dvds are fabulous.
I would have liked an additional audio output, but other than that I am very pleased with the purchase.

Samsung's 32-inch TXM3296HF DynaFlat high-definition digital TV monitor offers up to 800 lines of horizontal resolution and full 1080i input capability for use with a DTV set-top box or a DVD player. The set uses a 4:3 aspect ratio DynaFlat HDTV screen with anti-distortion/anti-glare picture tube. The Pro Chip Plus NTSC-to-480-progressive-scan line-doubling system converts incoming analog sources (like VCR, cable, and non-progressive-scan DVD) to a progressive-scan 480p display, eliminating conventional TV scan lines for a flicker-free picture. Total DSP (digital signal processing) converts standard analog broadcast TV signals to digital and compensates for varying signal strengths, and Defining Filter three-line combing technology removes blurred edges between colors and reduces dot crawl. The set also includes an Invar shadow mask for heightened contrast.
Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Other features include 10 watts per channel audio power, V-Chip parental controls, and plug-and-play setup, which uses automation and a simple menu to select the source (broadcast or cable), set the clock, and map the active channels.
Inputs consist of a dual DVD/DTV component-video input (Y/Pb/Pr), an RF input (for an older VCR or cable box), and three rear and one set of side audio-video inputs (including one S-video input) to accommodate a camcorder, a game console, or other sources. A .125-inch headphone jack and one set of audio-video outputs are also available. The set comes with a universal remote control.

Great picture, many features and a multitude of color adjustments possible.
This is a very heavy TV, pricy, but if you can afford this is the unit you want.
The wide screen is what seperates this unit from the rest plus it's size doesn't dominate a room but it's 34" picture is large enough even in my 20'x14'room.
The 1080I format seems to be where the industry is heading with CBS being the first major network now transmitting exclusivly in this format.

Olevia 542i 42-Inch LCD HDTV Review

Olevia 542i 42-Inch LCD HDTV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I keep on hearing just how good HDTV looks, and I've seen in-store displays and not been impressed, of course. I also haven't been impressed with most of the HDTVs I've seen in people's houses with all the glare and stuff ruining the picture. So, I waited a LONG time before getting an HDTV for two reasons. First, I had a price point the TV had to get down to before I would buy. Secondly, the TV had to be an LCD (need to wallmount above fireplace; need to connect to HTPC, so no plasma with the rectangular pixels). Therefore, after a HECK of a lot of research and reading review after review, I chose the Olevia 542i for a great many reasons.
Reasons included very high ratings, very few complaints, extremely low price, Phillips S-IPS LCD panel, excellent SD scaler, lots of picture modes/zoom/adjustments/etc, built with PC use in mind, firmware updateable (haven't updated yet, but I could), etc. Ok, so I get the TV when it's at its cheapest price ever (mwahaha!), which was a full Benjamin below what I was willing to pay for it (the extra money paid for the Peerless Onemount wallmount for it). After I unpack the TV, I quickly scoot it over and use a VGA cable to connect it to my main PC just to test it out with World of Warcraft. I was completely blown away. It was a 42" LCD computer monitor at 1360x768, so clear you couldn't see pixels unless you were within two feet of it (with my glasses on)!
Anyway, I tested it with a bunch of different sources and everything just amazed me. It looks WAY WAY better, even with standard-def s-video and component video sources, than my Sony WEGA 27" CRT TV. I didn't expect that at all. The scaler in this Olevia (and the 37" 5-series model) is just incredible. Noise reduction is extremely impressive also, better than my Sony WEGA CRT by far, as regular Dish Network content is full of noise (low-bitrate mpeg-2; I will get an mpeg-4 Dish HD receiver soon).
Well, I rarely post reviews of items and mostly just read tons of reviews, but I had to post a review for this TV, especially since I didn't see any reviews for it on Amazon. I posted a bunch of pictures I took with my camera at 2048x1536 resolution, but Amazon scaled them down so they don't really do the TV justice. Still, you can get an idea of how awesome this TV is by looking at the pics.
I can honestly say that this is the best-looking display of any kind I have ever seen for any price. It is truly a bargain and can easily compete with any 1080i LCD its size at twice the price. Oh, also, HD content puts even the best-looking DVDs playing through the best-quality DVD player to shame, and this TV shows every detail beautifully in HD. The only downside is the black-level detail, but it is less and less noticeable with higher quality sources (I don't even notice a loss of any black-level detail in HD).
