(More customer reviews)I bought this TV 1.5 years ago. I thought it was great for the first few months, then I gradually noticed that the picture just didn't seem as clear anymore. Now when I watch my digital cable, I can't even read small text on the screen because it is so blurry. Same thing for DVDs...forget about reading subtitles! It's very annoying and frustrating.
I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with it, but I am certainly NOT happy with my TV now. I contemplated buying the Sony WEGA model, but opted not too because of the price increase. Now I see it probably would have been worth it. No more Phillips products for me.
One other con, the TV is HUGE and HEAVY It's so awkward to carry, I almost killed myself moving it last summer.

Toshiba 32AF44 32" TV with FST PURE Flat Screen Review

(More customer reviews)I have always been impressed by Toshiba's televisions, and this one is no exception. I purchased this TV last week, and I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase. The picture looks great (especially DVDs through the component video inputs), the sound is way above average for a TV in this range, and the features are equal to what you'd find on pricier brands. Basically, Toshiba gives you the quality you want but without the huge pricetag. One thing made me sad though: only one set of Component Video inputs. So if you want that high quality Xbox experience in addition to DVDs, you'll have to switch it through your receiver (which is what I do). Anyway, great TV and great price.

After owning this set for four months, I am astonished at how BAD other televisions look. When my friend bought a 32 inch WEGA (non XBR) and had us over to take a look, I was appalled by the overdriven picture, extensive red push and large gap between scan lines. It was like watching television through a set of venetian blinds. The same with another friend's Toshiba flat tube set.
Further, if you're a gadget-type person. you'll appreciate the fantastically in-depth service menu. Every conceivable internal setting of the television can be accessed through the remote. We have dropped the red push altogether and the picture is considerably more pleasing than when the set was new.
Finally, the resolution of the picture tube is so much better than standard televisions that flaws, edits, and manipulations in NTSC sources can easily be detected with the naked eye. This could be a turn-off for some casual owners; other television sets are too blurry and inaccurate to reveal the flaws in a broadcast. Not the XBR! With this set, the difference between high quality and inferior broadcasts is as plain as day.
To sum up, this television is superior in every way. In fact, its superiority makes some common NTSC programming look pretty bad. Some owners won't like it, preferring to hide the flaws in the signal by watching through an inferior set.

It really makes a difference when you're watching widescreen movies. You do really need to use the composite input to appreciate the picture quality of the TV, though. Overall its a great buy for those who love movies but don't want to dish out too much money.

BROKSONIC - 32" Wide HD Digital LCD TV Review

(More customer reviews)You can get this TV for 400 or less. I picked one up for my girlfriend in November 2008, along with a Sharp BD player. We also run a PC to it with a wireless keyboard in order to watch TV through imdb and hulu, and their PS2, Xbox360 and Wii all run to it through a component video switch. We also hooked up an old Radio Shack antenna for HD brodcast TV (You don't need an "HD" antenna). Everything looks great!
If you're not going to use a calibration disc, like Digital Video Essentials, make sure you put it in Movie mode. You'll get weird artifacts in shadows in the default "sports" mode.
It doesn't automatically switch well between FS and Widescreen modes, so you may have to tell it the mode manually on occasion, and it defaults to Sports mode if it is unplugged. Those are my only two complaints.
BD titles and DVD titles look fantastic. I have a Pioneer Pro-111FD at home, and although it rocks, it did cost almost 8x the price. I don't mind watching a movie over there at all. The contrast is deep enough so you don't get those distracting washed-out blue-blacks, and the colors are bright and vivid. In fact, the picture at times is so jaw-dropping sharp and realistic (good source material), it looks almost 3D. I've looked at other bargain priced sets in the 32" size, priced around 500 or more. Save yourself a hundred or two and get this if you can find it. We/she and her family have been using it for about three months now and love it!

(More customer reviews)I can still remember the jump from a SDTV to this HDTV "without a tuner". This TV might not be the highest resolution, but it is a great buy. I remember hooking my Tivo system to it, and the picture was so much better, without any HDTV programming. For games, it's great. You can adjust the color and video noise reduction if you have several things hooked up to your television. I just bought a Nintendo Wii, along with HDTV cables. The games look really good on this TV. I approve this buy. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because of the lack of resolution sizes.

Panasonic's 32-inch HDTV-ready CT-32HL44 television provides state-of-the-art picture quality thanks to its innovative Tau PureFlat picture tube, which is perfectly suited to deliver outstanding home theater performance. It's compatible with both 1080i/480p HDTV displays, and it features a motion-adaptive 3D comb filter, selectable 16:9 viewing mode, progressive CinemaScan (3:2 pulldown), digital velocity scan modulation, and dual-tuner picture-in-picture.
Two-tuner picture-in-picture with split-screen display lets you view two programs at once by dividing the screen in half down the middle. Each program is shown at full height, with one program on the left side and the other on the right.
Progressive CinemaScan (3:2 pulldown) provides faithful reproduction of film-based materials. (More customer reviews)I researched LCD TV models and prices for over a year, checking them out in a local store. When I saw this Samsung, I jumped at it:
* Price was right, under $700
* Great picture with super low refresh rate(to minimize the blurring you see on older sets).
* The one in the store ran much cooler than older models. This was important as I wanted to put the set inside my entertainment cabinet.
* Great tuner: My old analog TV could only pick up 2 channels via the antenna. (I mostly watch DVDs.) The Samsung picked up over 20 digital channels flawlessly, just using a $20 RadioShack inside antenna! I don't need cable!
* The picture is simply stunning when you are viewing a hi-definition broadcast (1080i). I gasped when I first saw it.
Only downside: You can't use a VCR with this set because it doesn't have the outdated composite video input that VCRs require, only the newer component and HDMI inputs.
I've had this set for a couple of months and I love it!

The picture is great. SD cable looks very good. Audio is very good. Best of all is Sony reliability. My previous experience was the Samsung 30" SlimFit. That had bending issues at first and was replaced. Then it refused to turn on, and customer service was rude and unhelpful. The Slimfit has major reliability problems. I am very happy with this Sony that replaced it.
Adding to this review after 2 weeks of extensive use. I compared this TV to Sony's 37" KDF-37H1000 LCD projection TV. This 32" LCD TV won out because:
1. Sharper picture on HD signal - the KDF-37H1000 is a little more blurry. (Note the KDF-37H1000 picture is better than no-name brand LCDs). The Sony LCDs had better focus.
1a. LCD TVs have a brighter picture. The Sony TVs have 3 picture settings: i) Vivid (very bright, what you see in Best Buy, ii) Standard (less bright, what looks better at home), and iii) Cinema (softer, more reds and earth shades). On the KDF-37H1000, you have to set it to vivid to watch even at home. On LCDs, you have to reduce brightness becuase they're brighter pictures.
2. SD cable on LCD TV is much much better than on KDF-37H1000.
2a. Motion was much cleaner on the LCD TVs. Sports blurred on the KDF-37H1000. I watched a bit of "8 below" Disney's Alaskan adventure with lots of white dogs and snow, and it looked bad, blurry and soft on the KDF-37H1000.
3. LCD TV has much less depth. Looks sleeker. I also tapped my fingers and felt around the frames on the 2 TVs. The LCDs were firmer and fit better. The KDF-37H1000 frame was looser and cheaper materials like a toy.
4. Maintainence costs - the KDF-37H1000 will require $200-400 bulb replacement in 1.5 years. The sales people said this could even happen in less than a year due to bulb malfunctions, just like in a floor lamp or any lamp. Note, Sony is phasing out LCD projection TVs in favor of SXRD, Hence, parts for the KDF-37H1000 will become harder to find. The KDF-37H1000 lamps are already $400 (Sony parts are always costlier - look at their digital camera memories, compared to Canon's).
4a. The complex combination of chips, mirrors, projectors, lamps on a projection TV is more prone to break than the simpler LCD technology. I am an electrical engineer and design integrated circuits for a living.
5. The KDF-37H1000 generates more heat than LCD, but much less than plasma.
6. The KDF-37H1000 has moving parts, such as the cooling fan, etc., All of these are more prone to malfunction.
7. Consumer reports rates the LCD TV reliability higher than projection TVs after looking at consumer repair data. Projection TVs had higher rates of return and repair.
7a. The folks at Best Buy told me they saw higher rates of returns due to reliability on the KDF-37H1000 than on Sony's LCDs.
8. The LCD TV has higher pixel count 1368 X 768, compared to the KDF-37H1000's 1200 X 720. This leads to sharper picture and better focus.
9. Screen door effect on KDF-37H1000. When objects on screen moved, their individual pixels did not move as a group. The picture was constantly dissolving and reforming. Faces had spots that appeared and dissappeared.
10. 2-3 years from now, I can put the LCD TV on a dresser in my bedroom as a 2nd TV, or put it in my study as a computer monitor. Cannot do this with the KDF-37H1000.
11. Moving - when we move houses, the LCD TV will ride easily in the seat in my Honda Civic. Cannot do this with the KDF-37H1000, which will have to go in the back of the truck with my wife.
The KDF-37H1000 was better than the Sony LCD TV in terms of:
1. Sound was much better becuase larger speakers and probably more pwerful amp.
2. A few more features and options that I will not use.
3. Larger screen. However, you must sit further back to avoid seeing spots and motion blurs.
Note the KDF-37H1000 is an excellent TV and very reliable compared to no-name brands. Definitely more reliable than the Samsung Slimfit TVs. We just came out of a bruising warranty battle with Samsung, and their reliability and customer service is pretty bad. The KDF-37H1000 does look very good compared to Samsung or Westinghouse LCD TVs, which had cheap and shiny frames. However, the KDF-37H1000 is just not as good as Sony's 32" LCD TVs. If you want a bigger screen than Sony's LCDs, go 46" or 55" projection. The SXRD projection TVs had better motion. If you're thinking of 37", get an LCD.
One thing the KDF-37H1000 has going for it is Sony reliability. I work for IBM and we design integrated circuits for Sony's products. They require a 100 defective parts per million quality level from us. This is very good in the industry.

Samsung's 32-inch TXM3296HF DynaFlat high-definition digital TV monitor offers up to 800 lines of horizontal resolution and full 1080i input capability for use with a DTV set-top box or a DVD player. The set uses a 4:3 aspect ratio DynaFlat HDTV screen with anti-distortion/anti-glare picture tube. The Pro Chip Plus NTSC-to-480-progressive-scan line-doubling system converts incoming analog sources (like VCR, cable, and non-progressive-scan DVD) to a progressive-scan 480p display, eliminating conventional TV scan lines for a flicker-free picture. (More customer reviews)I picked up this Vizio 32" LCD for $399 at Sears. I was planning on getting a 720p TV but I couldn't pass up 1080p for the price. The picture is incredible, blacks are very dark! I did notice a little trouble with a horizontal line appearing at the top of SD broadcasts, adjusted the picture a bit and that is gone! The speakers are not fantastic, there is very little bass. They do have an equalizer but I haven't played with it. Overall this TV is a great deal and even at $500 performs like a much more expensive TV! I would highly recommend it.

This is a very heavy TV, pricy, but if you can afford this is the unit you want.
The wide screen is what seperates this unit from the rest plus it's size doesn't dominate a room but it's 34" picture is large enough even in my 20'x14'room.
The 1080I format seems to be where the industry is heading with CBS being the first major network now transmitting exclusivly in this format.
If you want to be the first on the block with a HDTV, this is the one you want.

I was really excited to be getting my first flat screen TV, and figured a product from Phillips Magnavox would be a good one. Well, I was wrong. Let me begin by saying that this TV is only four and a half months old! Major technical issues have arisen in which the TV makes horrible noises and shuts itself off. I looked around online and found lots of other people have had the same problem as well. Then you have to call their technical support, which is just a great way to kill some time before they come back and tell you to take it to a local service center, and that labor is coming out of your pocket. They will however let you know "how sorry they are to hear that," about 7 or 8 times. Not a great product, poor service, not super cheap either. Try another brand, especially if you are going to spend this kind of money.

Sharp Aquos LC32D44U 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I have both this TV as well as a Samsung LN-T2642H. It's very interesting to compare the two TV's performances. If you want the more balanced natural look, go with Sharp. If you're more interested in a vivid, colorful image go with Samsung. I also did an extended look at the Toshiba 26HL67.
There is a key difference between the panels Sharp uses compared to others. Sharp's TVs are made with panels called S-IPS while Samsung, Sony and Toshiba currently use a panel called S-PVA. This has everything to do with why Samsung, Sony and Toshiba have very strong color but one thing I noticed about Samsung is that when you look at it for a slightly low angle, the color gets darker and starts to invert. If you look it from above, the color gets lighter and starts to invert. With the Sharp, no matter what angle I look at it, the color doesn't change AT ALL! This is very impressive and cool!
I also notice that when I played around with the TV settings, it doesn't need much to look good, it almost always does. When you turn on the Active Contrast mode on the Sharp (it's equivalent to DNIe), it doesn't totally knock out the details in darker areas. At first, I had to keep checking to see if it was on or not because I was so used to the way the Samsung crushes black details even on the Low setting. Once again, I was more impress with the way this TV addresses contrast in fact I think the Sharp does a better job with contrast because of its black color.
The Sharp's black color is closer to black than the Samsung. The black color on the Samsung is more of a dark blue even on Warm temperature (it's especially noticably at slight vertical angles) but with the Sharp the black was much closer to real black.
The speakers on the Sharp doesn't distort at volume levels higher than 30. With the Samsung, when u turn the volume up pass 30, the bass tends to distort the fidelity of all the sound resulting in a buzz. This is probably due to the build of the unit and the lower wattage for the speakers. Sharp doesn't sound perfect either but it's definitely warmer and clearer at high volumes thanks to having 10 watts per speaker instead of 5. I would recommend everyone to get a 2.1 speaker for any LCD TV though. Take advantage of those sound outputs on the back of your TV! :) It definitely takes your experience to a higher level!
One minus I have with the Sharp was that it didn't have a headphone jack.
Overall, I think this is an excellent 32" TV. Sharp is definitely worth a look and probably my new LCD manufacturer of choice. It doesn't need as much tweaking when you switch between uses. I tested both TVs with PC (via DVI>HDMI), Xbox 360, HDTV, SDTV, HD-DVDs and upconverted DVDs. With the Samsung, I find myself always tweaking the settings between uses like changing the Energy Saving level, turning up the Digital NR for SDTV, turning it off for everything else, toning down the DNIe.
Thanks to Sharp's OPC, the backlight adjust very intelligently based on what's on the screen. I just leave the Active Contrast on because I know I'm not missing out darker details, the picture is very sharp and the panel is slightly faster thanks to the 6ms speed, which equals less motion blur with things like text and more solid image overall.
This Sharp is the real deal and reminds me much more of a CRT than the Samsung because the Samsung requires too much twinkering to get things comfortable. I think if the Samsung's black was more like true black and the vertical angle didnt distort so much I wouldn't tweak it as often.
So in summary, if you want the most vibrant colors and don't mind tweaking between uses by all means get a Samsung. (I still like the Samsung and would give it a 4 out of 5)
If you want a more, natural looking picture, that doesn't offer or require as much tweaking because it just plain looks good, go with a Sharp.
I think Toshiba and Sony TVs tend to do a better job with black crush and black color than Samsung but since the panels are the same technology (S-PVA), they still have the vibrant color and probably some vertical viewing weirdness.

I have nothing but highest praise for my Samsung! Extremely sharp color,focus, and excellent surround sound!
The only problem I had was the shipping company was two days late on the deliverey date.
