(More customer reviews)I purchased this TV for home use. I was looking for a self-contained unit that would perform well on its own without the need for added components. This is my second LCD TV purchase and, while electronically savvy, I'm not obsessive about every detail (I have not spent hours looking for burned out pixels with a magnifying glass or cycled through every menu option searching for bugs). Thus far, I am very pleased with this television. For a videophile, this might be a good second/bedroom/kids TV. This would also be a good TV for an office training room.
I looked at several different models before settling on this model. I initially looked at the Westinghouse LTV32W432 with built-in DVD player but the reviews were lackluster and the unit appeared to have some quirks (like DVDs always commencing with subtitles). The SK-32H590D32 appears to be the successor unit and Westinghouse seems to have corrected all of the issues from the LTV32W432.
I found the picture to be first-rate for a sub-$1000 LCD TV. I looked at a 32" Sony Bravia ($1200) and several other models in stores and the picture on this unit easily compares. It is worth noting that, if you only have analog cable, the picture on this TV (or any other LCD/Plasma TV) will be a touch grainy. That said, digital cable and DVDs on this model are strikingly clean and clear.
The audio seems more than adequate for a self-contained unit. It's not THx Dolby Digital theater surround sound, but it has decent depth, is clear, and has simple adjustments for treble, bass and balance.
Esthetically the TV has a nice look with a simple Westinghouse logo and a DVD slot on the front (the DVD slot has a blue LED inside which you can toggle on or off). Note that the TV is, more or less, matte black with a small polished metal bar on the bottom and not grey as it appears on the Amazon page. It has a fairly low depth profile - 5.9 inches without stand - which is amazing considering the it has a front loading DVD. The unit is also relatively light (less than 50 lbs) and has an X screw holes on the back for wall mounting (for first time flat screen TV buyers, note that if you want to mount this unit on the wall, you will need to buy a wall mounting bracket separately). This TV also has all of the controls - volume, channel, mode - cleanly mounted out of view on the right side (for when the remote inevitably gets misplaced).
The remote and menus are simple and easy to use. The TV started up out of the box with a few simple questions (day, date, cable station search) and was ready to watch. The single, simple remote for both TV and DVD was refreshing (might be a good TV for a less than technically savvy person - elderly parents or inept officemates come to mind). I found the menus/settings much like the Microsoft Windows "Start Menu" (thus being familiar) and found them intuitive and easy to use.
All-in-all I found this to be a good sub-$1000 LCD TV and, so far, think it was very much worth the price.
2010 Update: DVD player broke after 2 years - unrepairable.

Westinghouse SK-32H240S 32-Inch LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I scored my 32" Westinghouse LCD HDTV at my local Best Buy. It was on sale for $599, plus the guy getting it for me accidentally brought me an open box, so it came out to about $529 after tax. I got an absolutely CRAZY deal, I would have been more than willing to pay full price for this TV.
One thing that I really like about this TV are the avaliable hook ups. It two HDMI has two composite hookups (pretty much the standard thing for most DVD players and video game systems) and two component hookups (pretty much a high definition hook up, I use it for video games, it looks super clear) as well as an RF adapter for the antenna , and if you have an old video game system like a SNES in my case, you can hook that up through the RF too.
Another thing I really like is that it has an audio out. You can hook up external speakers, and it also allows you to select the internal speakers, external speakers, or BOTH. Both is something I really wanted, because I can get better surround sound with the use of both the internal speakers, and my external stereo speakers. Though the internal speakers aren't bad, and certainly do their job, external speakers will ALWAYS sound better. :P
For actually using the TV, I purchased a HD antenna, which ran about $60. When I was in the process of setting the TV up, I plugged it in and it automatically turned on, so BEFORE I plugged the antenna in, I flipped through a few channels, they were all pretty clear, though the intenna did help a TINY bit, I think something cheaper would have done just as well.
The LCD is nice and crisp, on HD broadcasted TV stations and video games (both S-video and Comp.) everything looked like it was real and was super crisp. Overall I have absolutely no complaints, and I am very pleased with this product.

Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37-Inch 1080p LCD Video Monitor Review

(More customer reviews)Let me start off by saying that this is my 4th Westinghouse TV(monitor). I've spent this last year replacing all of the CRTs in my house with flat panels (as opposed to "flat screens" which usually indicates bulky CRT/tube TVs). The logic was, I wanted to get rid of the weight and the bulkiness of the CRTs and I definitely wanted to upgrade to the High Definition picture and connections. I researched for about 6 months before deciding on the Westinghouse brand. There are several equal or better brands but some of them are twice the cost of the comparable Westinghouse and I am more of a bargain hunter. Okay, I'm thrifty.
I bought my first 37" Westinghouse (an LVM37w1) in January of 2006. I had heard of the Westinghouse brand, but it was only based on alarm clocks and other appliances that we had around the house as kids. I was spending over a $1,000 on this first purchase, so I crossed my fingers AND purchased the 4-year replacement warranty. Overall, I was ecstatic with the first TV. My only complaint was of a peripheral nature, the LVM37w1 is a monitor, not an actual HDTV(television with tuner) so I had to go out and purchase a separate used HDTV tuner(for ~$75 off Craig's list) in order to watch Hi-definition television.
I was so happy with the first Westinghouse TV, in June 2006, I bought my second one, a 32" HDTV (with an HD tuner built in). Again, I crossed my fingers and paid extra for the 4-year extended warranty.
This October, 2006, very happy with my previous purchases, I went ahead and completed my LCD flat panel for CRT swap around the house by buying one 42" Westinghouse LCD HDTV monitor (the LVM42w2) and one 37" Westinghouse LCD HDTV monitor (the LVM37w3). I didn't buy the 4-year extended warranties this time because I feel like the 1-year factory warranty is good enough. If you're going to have problems with your LCD, like dead pixels, it's invariably right out of the box. Thru my research, I've learned that pixels will rarely, rarely die out two or three years later.
I moved the original 37" LVM37w1 into my home office and hooked it up to my computer. I was able to instantly get the phenomonal 1920x1080 resolution using a cheapo $5.00 VGA/VGA cable. Some of my friends thought the monitor would be too large but trust me, once you work on your computer with a 37" monitor with a crystal clear picture, you will NEVER go back to a little 19" or 20". For example, this review I am writing is overly long but I can see the entire review on my 37" monitor in huge, perfectly defined 1/4" high text. It's wonderful.
So now I have experience with FOUR Westinghouse monitors (from 1-1/2 months up to 11 months) serving as computer monitors, televisions (with separately purchased HDTV tuners) and DVD monitors for movie night ... and I couldn't be happier with my choice of monitors. (NOTE: make sure you use an UP-CONVERSION DVD player as opposed to just a progressive scan. It makes your DVDs look fantastic and converts them to 1080i).
I think the moral of the story is:
- Buy from a reputable source. That way you can return them if necessary.
- I bought local. The stores I bought from gave me a 14-day return policy if I noticed any dead pixels. They claimed that the # of pixels had to be grouped in 10 or more, but their policy allowed a universal return, meaning even if I didn't like the color of the outer bezel, I could return the set. Therefore, if I had even noticed ONE dead pixel, I would have returned the set and stated that I didn't like the color of the bezel!
-NOTE: Out of my four monitors, three are 1080p(meaning 1920x1080 resolution) and one is 720p (meaning 1320x768 resolution). That means that I had over 7 MILLION pixels that could have been "dead" (meaning that the pixel was locked in on one color --- typically blacked out) and yet, after scouring all four sets, I never found a single dead pixel. The easiest way to check for dead pixels is to hook it up to your computer and run it thru its paces as opposed to trying to located them off a paused DVD or TV screen.

(More customer reviews)After researching the purchase of 2 LCD TV's for my kids, I was shopping around and discovered this Westinghouse. I actually didn't think it would be a serious TV, as it was less money that comparable LCD TV's sitting on either side of it on the stores shelf. All were on, and set to the same channel. So comparisons were easy! I was prepared to hate the Westinghouse, thinking is was in the same class as some of the "no name" brand sets..junk! After all it was less than $400.00!
But when we were getting ready to pick up the boxes of Phillips TV's and put them in the cart to take home, we started reading the box thatthe Westinghouse was in. Did my eyes deceive me? Did it really say LED on it! No way. We walked over the the high end and expensive LCD TV's. and the 32" ones that said LED were $700.00 plus! Samsungs, Vizio, Panasonics, etc.
First of all, an explanation for the "electronically challenged among us..like me! A regular LCD TV uses fluorescent edge lighting to shine thru the LCDs to make the picture viewable. Good enough!
Then there are newer technology LCD TV's with LED edge lighting...LED's all the way around the screen shine thru and illuminate the TV screen. Saves energy because LEDs use a small fraction of the energy as the fluorescent lights. Better but the black and darker colors are not as "black", and colors a bit washed out.
BUT...the Westinghouse LED back lit LCD's have black blacks! Deeper color, brighter, vibrant colors (wait till you see the yellows!). And way less energy, about the same as a 40 watt light bulb. And the TV is slim..I mean slim!
1" thick and 14 1/2 lbs!
Terrific featurers, nice price, outstanding technology for way less than others, all the featurers..great value over all! And I can't even begin to tout the picture quality except to say you have got to see it yourself!

(More customer reviews)I will start with the positives on this unit. When the TV first arrived I was super excited. The manufacturer packaging is very solid, and easy to open/remove. As the box noted, the TV uses LESS energy than a 60 watt lightbulb. This is huge for me (and the environment) because every time I add a new big gadget to my home I can always see an increase electric bill. My audio receiver, my Tivo, and my 40 inch LCD TV are all HUGE power suckers. It's nice to have a TV that produces such a bright and crystal clear picture that isn't going to have a noticeable impact on my electric bill. Speaking of the picture, it's beautiful. Noticeably better than my high-end Sony LCD TV which is about 1.5 years old. For a TV at this price point, I was very pleased. How they managed to get a TV with this amazing of picture quality so thin, so light, and so eco-friendly is amazing. Unfortunately, this is where the pro's stop. Westinghouse did such an outstanding of creating a thin, lightweight LED TV with amazing picture quality, but for some reason they decided to not care about any of the small details.
Unlike many LED/LCD tv's these days, the stand does not "snap in" in any way, rather you must just balance the TV on the stand while you are screwing it into place. Unless you have 3 arms, this means you need two people to get the TV on the stand. Not a huge deal, but even a cheap Dynex TV from Best Buy only requires one person to set up. Also, the included Westinghouse remote is not the nicest thing I've ever seen. Sure it gets the job done, but I find the volume and channel buttons to be located inconveniently, and the menu button is always a search to find since it is not labeled "menu" but rather has some illegible icon on it. Worse yet, this TV has composite inputs but no component inputs. Sure there is a VGA input and they threw in a component to VGA adapter, but I dislike using adapters- why lose picture quality when I don't have to? Also, the TV tuner coaxial input is so tight against the back of the TV that it is VERY hard to screw in a coaxial cable, it took me (no lie I timed it) 7 minutes to successfully screw a coaxial cable into the TV. Maybe if I busted out a pliers I could have gotten it in easier than with my hands, but why should I have to that Westinghouse, why???
Now all of these complaints are minor details, and probably would have been completely forgiven and gone unmentioned in this review if it wasn't for the audio on the TV. This is the real killer. To be fair, based on how thin the TV is, it's amazing they even got speakers in the thing at all. But I'd trade another quarter of an inch for some speakers with even a little quality. Any term you've ever heard to describe bad sound can be used to describe the sound on this TV. Hollow sounding, tin sounding, echo, unbalanced, choppy, I could continue but you get the idea. I figured I could get around this by connecting my surround sound system into the mix, but at that point, the sound started getting static. Yes static. Are we in the 1960's? My goodness. I did end up installing the Westinghouse firmware update, but all it did was make things a bit louder. No firmware update is going to change bad speakers, and a low end processor.
It's really a shock that anybody at Westinghouse decided it would be a good idea to send this TV out for review. It's a model that would be more well-suited for sale at a store where the salesman can talk it up all day and you'll never see a customer review before purchase. Based on what I've said here, it seems like my score of a 4 is VERY generous (which it is), but at the end of the day, the TV does have EXCELLENT (far above the competition) picture quality, and Westinghouse claims that what they send out via Vine was a early production unit. I'm hoping that they will take this feedback and make some changes before they start shipping to customers. As of now, I can't recommend the TV but if they do manage to make a couple minor fixes, the TV has great potential. I will update this review as necessary should things change (or not change) when they release the final unit.
Update 9/2/10:
After talking to Westinghouse technical support about my "static" issues with my external speakers, they told me that the audio outputs on the TV are not amplified, so I would need to purchase an amplifier to get the expected use of the external speakers. After looking around on Amazon, this looks to be an additional fifty bucks (minimum), so you may want to add that to the price of the TV if you are planning on connecting speakers. I still stand by the 4 star review and will continue to update as necessary.
Update 11/7/10:
Well, after using the TV for a few months now, I've actually gotten used to the TV's bad sound. For the price Amazon is currently selling the TV for, this is probably a decent choice for anyone who isn't an audio nut.

Like I said in the last update, I have gotten used to the bad sound. I just want to reaffirm that the firmware update DOES NOT improve the sound quality whatsoever. Amazon and the manufacturer are misleading you. No firmware update can fix underpowered speakers. Just wanted to post an update so nobody gets fooled by the message on the top of the page.
